Tourism officials on Mackinac Island are projecting a record-breaking season this summer, with advance hotel bookings already 30% ahead of last year’s pace. The iconic car-free island destination is preparing for an estimated 1.2 million visitors between May and October.
Several new attractions are debuting this year, including a guided kayaking tour around the island’s shoreline and an expanded evening light show at Fort Mackinac. The Grand Hotel has also completed a $15 million renovation of its east wing, adding 40 new luxury suites.
Ferry companies Shepler’s and Star Line have both added additional daily crossings to accommodate expected demand. Local business owners say the strong tourism forecast is generating optimism across the northern Michigan hospitality industry.
