The University of Michigan announced a groundbreaking partnership with Detroit-area tech companies to offer a completely free 16-week coding bootcamp for Detroit residents. The program, called Motor City Code, aims to train 500 participants in its first year in web development, data science, and cybersecurity.

Participants who complete the program will receive a professional certificate and guaranteed job interviews with partner companies including Rocket Mortgage, Ford Motor Company, and several growing Detroit startups. The program includes childcare assistance and a transportation stipend.

Applications open next month, with priority given to residents of underserved Detroit neighborhoods. University President Santa Ono called the initiative a critical step in ensuring that Michigan’s growing tech economy benefits all communities in the state.
