Abdul El-Sayed has been declared the winner of a contentious Senate primary against Congresswoman Haley Stevens.

As of Wednesday morning, El-Sayed is leading with 48.48% of the vote. While there are still some votes out, election forecasters have determined that they will not be enough for Stevens to overcome the deficit.

Both candidates were dogged by controversy throughout the primary, with Stevens being repeatedly attacked by progressives for her support for Israel and taking corporate PAC money.

The American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee, also known as AIPAC, spent a record amount in the primary in support of Stevens in a failed test of its remaining influence on the Democratic Party.

Stevens was routinely mocked both in the media and on social media for viral gaffes, such as a speech where she said she was going to “bring it with a little enthusiasm” and a little bit of “stick-it-to-them”.

While progressive Abdul El-Sayed’s victory will resound throughout the country in the coming days, he was the subject of numerous controversies that will no doubt resurface throughout the general election.

El-Sayed has appeared at campaign events with far-left social media personality Hasan Piker, who was accused of embracing political violence when he implied his followers should kill Florida Senator Rick Scott.

The progressive superstar candidate has also been accused of embellishing his credentials as a physician.

A Politico report found that he repeatedly referred to himself as a physician despite not holding a license to practice medicine in either Michigan or New York.

El-Sayed will face another closely contested battle in the general election, where he has trailed Republican nominee Mike Rogers in most recent polls.
