The Detroit Lions played their second game of the season on Thursday Night Football earlier this week. They had a tough task taking on the Buffalo Bills in their new stadium debut. In college football, The Michigan State Spartans headed down to South Bend, Indiana, and lost to the #3 Fighting Irish. The only winner of the week was the Michigan Wolverines, who trounced the UTEP Miners at home.
For the Detroit Lions, despite putting up 31 points for the second straight week, they couldn’t hold on against the Bills. The Lions’ defense looked horrendous. Through two games, the Lions have allowed 13 plays of 20+ yards on defense, which leads the league. Despite that, the Detroit Lions offense killed it on Thurday. Quarterback Jared Goff is tied for the league-lead in touchdown passes and has only one turnover worthy play according to PFF.
The ailing secondary lost Avonte Maddox on Thursday to a season-ending injury. To make matters worse, Head Coach Dan Campbell was noncommittal on a return timeline for Pro Bowl safety Kerby Joseph. The Lions need to make a splash if they’re going to save their season on defense.
Michigan State performed valiantly against a national title contender in Notre Dame. It was a one-score game until the end of the third quarter. Their defense looked much improved from what was the Big Ten’s worst last season. However, Alessio Milivojevic struggled against Notre Dame’s pass rush. He only completed 52.9% of his passes for two interceptions on Saturday. Truthfully, the Spartans will need elevated quarterback play to compete at the highest levels of the Big Ten.
The Wolverines had a very easy week three match-up. Coming into this game, UTEP was considered one of the worst FBS teams in the nation. The Miners kept the game close for two quarters and pounced on the Wolverines with surprise pass attempts. Despite that, in the second half, quarterback Bryce Underwood hit a stride for the first time this season and led Michigan to four straight touchdowns in the third quarter.
The Detroit Lions will get the opportunity to bounce back this week as they play the 1-1 New York Jets off extra rest. After their loss, Detroit comes into this game as near touchdown favorites in their second home game of the season. #17 Michigan will host #18 Iowa in what will likely be a smash-mouth, defensive-minded matchup on Saturday in the 3:30 pm slot. Michigan enters as favorites of 5.5 points over the Hawkeyes. Lastly, the only underdogs of the week are the Michigan State Spartans. They host the undefeated Nebraska Cornhuskers in a game where they are a 5.5-point dark horse.
