Wolverines Rally to a Second-Half Victory While Michigan State Loses in Surprise Comeback

Michigan and Michigan State went in two different directions on Saturday. Michigan rallied back after making a massive change at quarterback. On the other hand, Michigan State blew a lead and a chance for redemption against Pat Fitzgerald’s old team. Both games could set the tone for what the rest of the season looks like.

Let’s start with the weekend’s victors, the Michigan Wolverines. After an abysmal first half for Bryce Underwood, Michigan pulled the plug. During that half, Michigan scored zero points, and Underwood threw two interceptions. It was at that time that they turned to true freshman QB Tommy Carr. Tommy is the grandson of former Michigan Head Coach Lloyd Carr. He sparked the offense and led the Michigan Wolverines to a 21-point second half and a win. He threw for a touchdown and ran for another. The big question is whether Michigan will allow Tommy Carr to start next week. And whether the offensive success will continue.

Michigan State choked away a shot at their first ranked win of the season versus #25 Northwestern. This would’ve been a major win for head coach Pat Fitzgerald against his former 17-year employer. It was also former Michigan State quarterback Aiden Chiles’ return to Spartan Stadium. Michigan State built a late eight point lead with minimal time on the clock. After Northwestern tied the game and ran a bizarre fake punt, Michigan State was gifted a short field. They missed a field gold and let Northwestern crush them on the ensuing game winning drive. Michigan State had one last shot to right the ship this week vs UCLA or the season will be lost.

Looking to the future, Michigan plays a tough contest against #6 Indiana on the road. Michigan State plays #9 UCLA who will be on their second game without QB Nico Iamaleava. The Detroit Lions will be coming off bye against their rival the Green Bay Packers. The Lions are currently three point favorites against the Packers.
