The discovery of a dead newborn at Michigan’s Electric Forest music festival has prompted an ongoing investigation by Michigan State Police as authorities work to determine exactly what happened.

The body of a baby less than one month old was discovered Sunday morning inside a portable toilet in the camping area of the sold-out festival at the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury. According to police, an employee with the restroom vendor found the infant while performing routine maintenance on the festival’s final day.

Investigators have not yet determined how the baby died, whether the infant was a boy or girl, or whether a parent or guardian has been identified. Michigan State Police said an autopsy was completed Monday, and investigators are awaiting those results before releasing additional information. Lt. Pat Agema also said Tuesday that the death has not been classified as a homicide at this time.

Authorities are asking anyone who attended the festival and may have witnessed unusual activity near the camping area to come forward. Police have also urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation remains active.

According to WOOD-TV, sources familiar with the investigation said the infant appeared to have been born inside the portable toilet, with the umbilical cord and placenta still present when the body was discovered. However, investigators have not determined whether the child was stillborn or died after birth, and officials have not confirmed those details publicly.

Electric Forest organizers shared the Michigan State Police appeal on social media, saying they were “heartbroken” by the tragedy and encouraging anyone with information to assist investigators. The annual electronic music festival typically draws tens of thousands of attendees to western Michigan each summer.
