House Republicans pass landmark legislation to cut state property taxes
Michigan House Republicans passed sweeping legislation this week to significantly cut state property taxes that would save taxpayers up to $1,200 a year if signed in to law.
The multi-bill package would eliminate the 6-mill tax, the 0.75% real estate transfer tax, and the pop-up tax.
The legislation would also lower energy costs, freezing rate hikes from utility companies during a time when energy costs are on the rise.
The bills received near-unanimous support from House Republicans, with only State Representative Jaime Green, R-Richmond dissenting, while Representative Karen Whitsett, D-Detroit voted with Republicans.
“To be able to see something like this today, to be able to go forward and to be able to make a difference to people who need to see relief immediately is extremely important,” Whitsett said.
Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, celebrated the passage of the bill package in a late-night press conference after the bills passed.
“Now, we’re on the way to really give people in Michigan real relief,” said Speaker Hall.
The bill package cannot be implemented until the House also passes a bill that will replace some of the lost revenue by raising taxes on luxury services. That bill is currently sitting in the Government Operations Committee and is tie-barred to the rest of the bill package.
Democrats overwhelmingly voted against the plan, with one Democratic Representative calling the bill package a “gimmick”.
“This property tax reform is fake,” said state Rep. Julie Brixie, D-Meridian Twp. “It’s a gimmick. It’s just a way for them to flood mailboxes all summer long and all fall.”
