MSU President steps down amid infighting over DEI, controversial resolution
Michigan State University president Kevin Guskiewicz announced his departure from the state’s largest university on Wednesday amid infighting among members of the Board of Trustees.
Guskiewicz announced that he would be heading up Clemson University in South Carolina and blamed discord on the Board for his exit.
Both of Michigan’s flagship universities now have to fill vacancies for president after University of Michigan president-elect Kent Syverud stepped down prematurely due to a brain cancer diagnosis.
Guskiewicz’ resignation is not the first sign that the university is in turmoil, as he is its sixth president in just eight years.
Some reports indicate that infighting among the Board of Trustees may have started with an inflammatory article by Trustee Rema Vassar over the University rolling back DEI policies.
Just days before Guskiewicz announced his resignation, the MSU board approved a measure to double his salary to $2 million, a measure that did not prove to be enough to prevent the president from leaving.
Already, Guskiewicz’ departure has renewed a discussion about how Michigan’s Board of Trustees are selected, with Whitmer and some legislators pushing for members to be appointed rather than elected.
Infighting among the Board of Trustees came to a head after members passed a resolution that would prevent members from ‘undermining’ decisions made by the Board or providing ‘misleading or false’ information about the university.
Three members voted against the resolution, and Trustee Mike Balow sharply criticized it as an “abomination” that could be used to retaliate against any trustee who disagreed with the Board.
There has been speculation that the resolution was put forward as a result of an article written by Vassar critiquing the University’s rollback of DEI policies, with the Trustee accusing the University of ‘abandoning its students’ and claiming without sufficient evidence that ‘anti-black violence’ has plagued Michigan State.
