The Detroit Lions' opening week of training camp has featured encouraging performances, but Friday's practice ended with injury concerns after Alim McNeill and Jimmy Rolder exited early.
The Detroit Lions have wrapped up the opening days of training camp with several encouraging performances, but Friday’s practice also brought an early injury scare involving two defensive contributors.
Defensive tackle Alim McNeill and rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder both exited practice before it concluded after appearing to suffer injuries, raising concerns for a defense that is already managing several players returning from offseason ailments. Neither player’s injury severity was immediately known, though both will likely be monitored closely in the coming days.
The following players left practice early today to be evaluated for potential injuries.
McNeill’s status is particularly important for Detroit after the veteran defensive tackle spent much of the offseason working his way back to full strength. He is expected to anchor the interior of the Lions’ defensive line alongside several young contributors, making his health a key storyline entering the preseason. Rookie linebacker Rolder has also generated positive attention early in camp as he competes for a depth role and special teams opportunities.
Despite the injury concerns, Detroit has seen several positive developments through the first few practices. Right tackle Blake Miller has continued to receive first-team repetitions, while linebacker Derrick Barnes has flashed playmaking ability on defense. Kicker Jake Bates has also remained consistent during special teams work as the Lions continue installing both offensive and defensive schemes under head coach Dan Campbell.
Training camp remains in its early stages, giving Detroit time to evaluate its roster before preseason action begins. However, the availability of McNeill and Rolder will be among the biggest storylines to watch over the next several practices as the Lions hope to avoid significant setbacks while preparing for the 2026 season.
