William Lawrence has defeated Tom Barrett in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. The race was called by the Associated Press on Wednesday afternoon. Lawrence’s candidacy rose from a distant third in the primary all the way to a general election victory. Will Lawrence will be Michigan’s 7th District’s third congressman in as many terms. This seat was previously Elissa Slotkin and then Tom Barrett’s.

Will Lawrence entered this race in the shadow of former Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam, who had significantly more cash on hand. He won the primary by carving out a lane as a progressive and through his large canvassing operation. In the end, he won the primary with 43% of the vote in the three-way race.

He won despite past scandals arising during the campaign. William was previously arrested while protesting, and a campaign surrogate was convicted as a child molester. He also lapsed his status as a Democrat Socialist just before the 2026 Congressional Primary. He benefited from the endorsement of Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
