Republican Rep. Tim Walberg won reelection in Michigan’s 5th Congressional District, defeating Democratic challenger Christian Vukasovich. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday evening.
Walberg campaigned on strengthening border security, lowering taxes and reducing federal spending. As chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, he helped advance changes to federal student lending and higher education policy included in the tax and spending legislation President Donald Trump signed in July 2025. Vukasovich, an educator and labor organizer, emphasized protecting rural health care access and addressing rising costs for working families.
The Cook Political Report rated the district Solid Republican heading into the election. The southern Michigan district stretches along the state’s borders with Indiana and Ohio. Walberg first entered Congress in 2007 and, after losing reelection in 2008, returned in 2011. His victory keeps the seat in Republican hands for another two-year term.
