Democrats flipped the Michigan House, regaining control of the chamber after Republicans won the majority in 2024.
Democrats reclaimed control of the Michigan House of Representatives, overturning the Republican majority and restoring their authority over the chamber’s legislative agenda.Bridge Michigan confirmed Democratic control on Wednesday mornnig. Democrats had secured at least 60 of the chamber’s 110 seats, with a number of contests still unresolved. The result gives Democrats the power to select the speaker, organize committees and decide which bills receive hearings and floor votes.
House Democrats campaigned on lowering household costs, expanding access to affordable health care and strengthening public education. Their agenda included limiting prescription drug costs, making universal school meals permanent and supporting Rx Kids, which provides financial assistance during pregnancy and a baby’s first year. Democrats pointed to school meals and other investments championed during their previous majority as examples of their approach. Republicans emphasized property tax relief, spending restraint and their role in negotiating road funding and tax breaks for tips and overtime income.
Republicans entered the election holding 58 seats to Democrats’ 52, leaving Democrats needing a net gain of four seats to secure an outright majority. All 110 House seats were on the ballot for two-year terms. The victory reverses Republicans’ 2024 takeover and gives Democrats a stronger position in negotiations over schools, infrastructure and the state budget. The result restored Democrats trifecta in Lansing as Democratic Governor candidate Jocelyn Benson won her election.
