Gretchen Whitmer was once hailed as a pragmatic progressive who delivered Democratic victories in a battleground state. Now, in her final year as governor, she is facing a revolt from the very progressive coalition that helped propel her to power.

Whitmer has faced mounting criticism from the left after vetoing legislation backed by many progressives, appearing in a viral hot-mic moment to side with the CEO of one of America’s largest tech companies over concerns raised by her own constituents, and drawing backlash for a photo op with President Donald Trump.

A recent opinion piece by one of Michigan’s flagship center-left news outlets summarized the progressive mutiny against Whitmer with the following question:

How many betrayals does it take to get to the center of what many progressives now see as a corporate sellout?

As Democratic outrage over President Donald Trump mounted during his third month back in office, Whitmer faced intense criticism from fellow Democrats and progressives for meeting with the president to discuss tariffs and Michigan’s defense industry.

The meeting culminated in a widely circulated Oval Office photo in which Whitmer attempted to conceal her face behind a stack of folders as reporters took pictures.

Then, the Governor was caught in a viral hot mic moment talking to Oracle’s CEO about the controversial data center in Saline Township.

“We’re used to people saying f*** no and doing it anyway”, the Governor could be heard saying in the video.

The remarks came amid fierce local opposition to the proposed data center, with residents arguing it would consume excessive water and electricity while providing limited local benefits.

Simmering tensions came to a boil when Whitmer vetoed nine bills addressing progressive priorities that were the subject of a prolonged legal battle.

Labor leaders in the state openly defied the Governor, issuing a press release claiming that Whitmer betrayed “Democratic values” and “abandoned” her supporters.

“Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s veto of these nine bills, following a long legal battle waged by leaders in her own party, betrays democratic values and abandons the very people who have supported her in office,” a joint statement from the AFL-CIO and UAW read. 

For a governor who once embodied the ambitions of Michigan’s progressive movement, Whitmer now finds herself defending her record against accusations of betrayal from many of the activists and labor leaders who helped put her in office.
