Staffer on El-Sayed payroll charged in sweeping indictment, made inflammatory anti-American statements online

Former Abdul El-Sayed Aide Indicted in UM Threat Probe

A staffer who received multiple payments from progressive US Senate candidate Abdul-El Sayed has been charged in a sweeping criminal indictment related to threats made against University of Michigan officials and a Jewish organization.

Marian Odeh, 24, of Dearborn, was listed as a defendant in a 63-page indictment released by the Department of Justice on Wednesday.

Odeh reportedly received multiple payments from the El-Sayed campaign in 2026, including a $154 disbursement on March 3rd and another for $593 on March 13th.

An independent review of Odeh’s statements indicates that she has made inflammatory statements that include accusing America of being “imperialist” and critiquing US foreign policy.

US Attorney Jeremy Gorgon alleged that the eight individuals indicted threw “noxious chemicals” in the homes of their targets and taped demand letters to their doors.

“In the dead of night, masked and hooded defendants allegedly threw noxious chemicals through the windows of families’ homes and taped demand letters to their front doors. At every step they attempted to cover their tracks and delete evidence of their crimes.”

Other illegal actions taken by those indicted include spray painting antisemitic threats on the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit’s building.

While it is not immediately clear what role Odeh played, a review by the Good Goose Gazette found previously unreported articles authored by Mariam Odeh for the Michigan Daily. The articles list a University of Michigan email address for Odeh. Federal prosecutors have identified the defendants in the case as individuals associated with the University of Michigan.

In a 2021 article, Odeh wrote: “We hate America’s foreign policy that advocates for the destruction of the countries we belong to. We hate that the American government engages in imperialism abroad. We hate that America feels so entitled to our natural resources to the point where forever wars have become the norm.”

The DOJ indictment is a departure from past responses towards students accused of intimidating University officials and Jewish people.

A Senior Research Fellow for the Heritage Foundation claimed that Jewish students are fleeing to universities in America’s South to avoid targeted harassment and incivility, in part because officials at universities such as Harvard have failed to address antisemitism.
