Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was caught telling the CEO of Oracle that she is used to dismissing citizen’s concerns in a hot mic moment that is sure to land her in hot water.
The comments were made during a groundbreaking ceremony for a massive data center project in Saline, Michigan, called “The Barn” that is expected to cost $16 billion and span 550,000 square feet.
While no one at the event has confirmed exactly what Whitmer said in the now-viral video, reporting on the incident and a close listen to the video indicate that the Governor said, “We’re used to people saying ‘f*ck no,’ and doing it anyway.”
The comment is not the only one from a prominent Democratic politician that has spurred accusations of elitism in recent months.
In May, US Senate candidate and current State Senate Majority Whip Mallory McMorrow defended a now-deleted agreeing with the notion that rural Americans could learn from coastal elites.
Whitmer’s hot mic moment will likely galvanize residents of Saline who have been protesting the data center, citing concerns over the environment, energy costs, and blight issues.
“For a governor who’s been so committed to climate and green energy and things to be sort of rolling out the red carpet for a company that is almost certainly going to pollute and destroy our community, it’s just baffling to me,” protest organizer Jordan Rice said in December.
Data centers remain widely unpopular among Americans, particularly when they are constructed in their local area.
A Gallup poll conducted in May found that 71% of Americans would oppose a data center being built in their area, with a majority of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents opposing their construction.
