The first debate of the campaign cycle came in the Attorney General race with Eli Savit and Doug Lloyd this week. Eli Savit is the Washtenaw County prosecutor and is running on a progressive platform. On the other hand, Doug Lloyd is a moderate Republican and the prosecutor for Eaton County. The two candidates made their differences clear during the televised debate.
The debate was hosted by WDIV Local 4. It featured questions about artificial intelligence, the Trump Administration, and Line 5. it was relatively short, as it was a 30-minute contest between the two candidates. In contrast to many debates in recent memory, this one was fairly calm and collected.
On artificial intelligence, Savit said, “I think that AI is a generational challenge and one that we need to be very heavily involved in combating.” While Lloyd praised sitting AG Dana Nessel in her lawsuit against META over their child safety guardrails.
When pressed about whether Lloyd could potentially sue the Trump Administration, he said, “If the federal government is doing something that harms the citizens of Michigan, then the attorney general better go after the federal government.”
Eli Savit went into detail about his opposition to Line 5, saying, “I believe it is an absolutely disastrous decision.. I’m going to fight to get that decision off the books.” He was speaking on a recent ruling that said the federal government preempts the state when it comes to authority over the pipeline.
The most recent poll on the Attorney General race showed Eli Savit narrowly ahead of Doug Lloyd, 36%-35 %. However, this poll contains 29% undecided voters. This race will be neck and neck until Election Day and may be the tightest general election race.
