Michigan lawmakers from both parties are remembering U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) following his death at the age of 71 after what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.” Graham served in the U.S. Senate since 2003 and was one of the chamber’s most influential voices on foreign policy, national security, and the judiciary.

The South Carolina Republican built relationships with members of Michigan’s congressional delegation over more than two decades in Washington, prompting an outpouring of tributes from both Republicans and Democrats.

Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) remembered Graham as a lawmaker who, despite political disagreements, remained approachable and willing to work across the aisle. Dingell said she treasured their friendship and praised his commitment to public service, noting that Washington had lost a consequential figure.

Republican members of Michigan’s congressional delegation also honored Graham’s legacy. Rep. Bill Huizenga described him as a steadfast defender of American interests, while Rep. John James highlighted Graham’s decades of military and public service. Other Michigan Republicans similarly praised Graham’s leadership on national security and foreign policy, areas in which he became one of the Senate’s most recognizable figures.

According to The Detroit News, lawmakers from both parties reflected on Graham’s ability to maintain personal friendships despite sharp political differences, with several noting that he frequently worked with colleagues across the ideological spectrum and earned respect throughout Congress.

Graham’s death prompted condolences from political leaders across the United States and abroad, including President Donald Trump and numerous foreign leaders, underscoring the influence he wielded during more than two decades in the Senate.
