Michigan man arrested in Breaking Bad-esque scheme involving meth materials at Michigan State University
A Michigan man was arrested on Wednesday for possessing meth-making substances inside a Michigan State University building.
The individual, 31-year-old Xin Tong has been charged with possessing substances to make meth and damaging a building on Michigan State University’s campus.
It was not made immediately clear if the man was operating a meth lab inside Wells Hall at Michigan State University, or if he only damaged the building, as prosecutors and MSU authorities have put out conflicting statements.
The incident occurred near the end of the semester as Michigan State University students were taking their final exams, leading to some exams in Wells Hall being delayed and moved to a new location.
“Tuesday morning, we show up here for the final, and as we’re talking to one of the cops that’s outside the building that the final is moved and Wells Hall is closed again,” said freshman Rachel Isbey.
Another student reportedly said that their exam was moved online after he was supposed to take one of his finals at Wells Hall.
“This was kind of crazy considering I did have classes there, and I did have a final this week there. My final got moved to online, so it worked out,” said freshman Olivia Roshkowski.
While there is no evidence at this time that Xin Tong was attempting to sell drugs to Michigan State University students, some expressed concerns that the drugs could be circulating in their campus community.
“I don’t think it would be that dangerous for us, per se, but dangerous for what they could be distributing around campus,” said sophomore Dareiana Butler-Dawson.
Reports allege that Tong used an old student ID to access MSU buildings, though law enforcement has not commented on whether he was a student or faculty member, citing student privacy laws.
Tong is being held at the Ingham County Jail on a $500,000 cash or surety bond.
