Representative Tom Barrett, R-Mi. joined Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his nationwide “Take Back Your Health” tour this week in Charlotte, Michigan.

The visit could help mobilize a critical component of the Republican Party base for Barrett’s re-election that is focused on health issues and supports RFK and President Trump’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiatives.

Barrett and Kennedy were joined by leaders from the America First Policy Institute and the Michigan Farm Bureau at a barn at Country Mill Farms, where they emphasized the importance of healthy eating.

Kennedy connected healthy eating to national security, citing a study claiming that 77% of America’s youth cannot currently qualify for military service.

“This has national security implications,” Kennedy said. “It is absolutely destroying our country economically.”

Representative Barrett focused on the value of eating healthy as preventative care, saying that food is the “least expensive medicine that we have”.

“These are things that we have to tackle,” Barrett said. “And we know that the least expensive medicine that we have is the food that we put into our body, where a lot of making healthier choices and healthier decisions is going to prevent a wide range of health conditions that we may suffer from later in life.”

The Make America Healthy Again initiative may be one element of both Barrett and the Trump administration’s agenda that is able to reach Independent voters ahead of the midterms, as it prioritizes many concerns that cross partisan lines and were once considered liberal.

Barrett’s re-election will be one of the most closely watched in the country, as the race currently has a Cook Partisan Index of R+0, indicating a tie, and is rated as a Toss Up.
