Forlini welcomes transparency while Benson rails against anti-fraud efforts

Federal Government Launches Election Fraud Investigation in Macomb County

The Department of Homeland Security reported that it is conducting an “active investigation” into noncitizen voting in Macomb County in Michigan.

The critical swing county received a subpoena from the federal government after Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini stated that he had discovered at least 15 noncitizens registered to vote in the county.

Forlini has already announced his intent to cooperate with the investigation, saying that subpoenas and requests for information will be sent to the county’s attorneys.

“We always cooperate,” Forlini said, calling the request “pretty standard.” He said that any time the federal government requests information from the county it is provided to them.

Forlini received the Republican nomination for Secretary of State in late March and has pledged to be less partisan than current Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who is running for Governor.

Benson has taken a confrontational stance towards President Donald Trump as Trump has made election integrity a key priority of his Presidency.

In late September, the Department of Justice sued Benson after she refused to provide information on the state’s registered voter list.

Benson also has fought attempts by the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration to create lists of eligible voters in each state.

“As secretary of state, I will protect the votes and voices of Michiganders. The law is on our side, and I will take swift action to fight this illegal order in court,” Benson said of the executive order by Trump.

Recent polling has indicated that Americans overwhelmingly support showing proof of citizenship to vote, something Republicans are currently trying to codify in to law using the SAVE Act.

A Politico poll conducted in May found that 52 percent of respondents support showing proof of citizenship to vote, while only 18 percent oppose the concept.
