Tulsi Gabbard Resigns Following Mounting Criticism Over Epstein Files Handling

Former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation this week, ending a turbulent tenure that drew sustained criticism over her handling of transparency issues, particularly surrounding records tied to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

The resignation comes amid a series of high-profile departures from the Trump administration, including that of former Attorney General Pam Bondi and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Gabbard said she was stepping down to care for her husband, who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. President Donald Trump thanked her publicly for her service following the announcement.

But Gabbard leaves office after facing months of scrutiny from lawmakers and transparency advocates who accused her office of failing to fully release or promptly provide documents connected to Epstein despite repeated public pressure.

Congressional Democrats, including Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robert Garcia, sent formal letters to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence demanding answers about delays in producing Epstein- and Maxwell-related materials. Critics argued Gabbard’s office slow-rolled disclosures while simultaneously prioritizing politically advantageous intelligence releases on unrelated topics.

The controversy intensified as public frustration mounted over the lack of transparency surrounding Epstein’s network and associates. Critics accused Gabbard of selectively embracing declassification efforts when politically beneficial while resisting disclosure on one of the most publicly scrutinized scandals in recent memory.

The Epstein files were the defining controversies of her time in office. While public pressure for broader disclosure continued to grow, critics said Gabbard consistently failed to provide meaningful transparency or clear timelines regarding what records would ultimately be released.

Despite maintaining support from portions of the anti-interventionist right, Gabbard exited office under a cloud of controversy that increasingly overshadowed her role within the administration and fueled bipartisan criticism over her stewardship of the nation’s intelligence community.
