Sayed in hot water after being caught without a physicians license, embellishing record of treating patients

Dem Senate Candidate Caught Embellishing Physician Credentials

Controversial Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is in hot water once again after he was caught repeatedly embellishing his record as a physician in the state of Michigan.

Sayed, who has also been in the headlines for inflammatory statements and a campaign event with far-left podcaster Hasan Piker, reportedly referred to himself as a physician numerous times to bolster his campaign credentials despite not holding a valid license.

The candidate currently refers to himself as a physician on his LinkedIn profile and described himself as such during a debate in Detroit last month.

While Sayed is currently the top polling candidate in the Democratic Senate primary, some Democratic insiders have already grown fatigued with him grabbing headlines for all the wrong reasons.

“The perception in Michigan is that he is, at least at one point in his life, a licensed physician,” said Chris Dewitt, an unaligned Democratic strategist based in Michigan. “That apparently is not the case, and it blows up a big part of his campaign.”

Another consultant pointed out that it was “weird” that Sayed called himself a physician despite not treating patients for years.

“It’s a weird thing to hang your hat on in terms of a biographical detail if you never actually practiced medicine,” said Adrian Hemond, a Democrat who is CEO of Lansing-based political consulting firm Grassroots Midwest.

Sayed’s campaign has tried to get out in front of the story by pointing out that he has discussed why he chose to work in public health rather than medicine in previous campaign speeches.

“Rather than this being a gotcha attack, this is Dr. El-Sayed’s origin story — one that Michiganders are familiar with,” El-Sayed spokesperson Roxie Richner said.

Sayed has reportedly dressed up in a white doctor’s coat numerous times to benefit his campaign, including a 2018 campaign ad when he ran for Governor of New York and for a fundraising pitch.

New York law prohibits people from referring to themselves as physicians if they are not licensed, though it is unclear at this time if the New York Attorney General’s office is investigating the incident.
