Progressives struck a celebratory tone after winning a tense convention battle this past weekend in Windsor, Michigan, with Washentaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit being just one of numerous progressive candidates who will be on the ballot in the general election.

While the liberal wing of the party sees Savit’s nomination as a victory, Democratic insiders have both privately and publicly raised the alarm about electability issues, as Savit’s far-left positions on criminal justice policies and scandals mount.

Just days before the convention, it was revealed that Savit was using Washentaw County funds for campaign travel, with his campaign pledging to repay thousands in gas expenses to the county.

Savit’s campaign released a statement that said the candidate “will be voluntarily reimbursing the county in the amount of any gas purchases he has made since he launched his campaign.”

“As a public servant, Eli has always strived to hold himself to a higher standard than simply what is allowed,” his campaign’s statement said. “And Eli will always strive to maintain the public trust.

Savit’s misuse of county funds is just one issue that could affect his ability to win in November; however, as Republicans have already launched a broadside against the candidate for his stances supporting cashless bail, decriminalizing prostitution, and decriminalizing psychedelics.

“As Washtenaw County Prosecutor, Savit constantly chose criminals over victims.

He pushed no-cash-bail policies that allowed dangerous criminals to be put right back on to Michigan’s streets, refused to prosecute sex work, and adopted policies legalizing hallucinogenic drugs” the Republican Attorney Generals Association said the day after his nomination.

Savit will face Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd in the general election. Lloyd is running on a platform that includes depoliticizing the Michigan Attorney General’s office, protecting Second Amendment rights, and strengthening election integrity measures.
