The Michigan Democratic Party is in disarray after disgruntled candidates have called the results of the party’s recent convention in to question.
The convention, which occurred on Sunday, April 19th, also saw numerous disruptions from progressive delegates and activists, and saw some party insiders voicing concerns about the electability of the party’s nominees.
The controversy began after one delegate claimed last week that she voted from her home in Antrim County, something that violates the rules of the MDP.
Now, State Senator Sylvia Santana, who lost her bid to be a Michigan State University trustee, has alleged that as many as 200 delegates voted improperly or were not properly credentialed.
The claim has raised alarm among top Democratic officials in the state of Michigan, including Attorney General Dana Nessel.
“I learned in the days immediately following the convention that the Election Buddy app did not correctly attribute my votes or my congressional district, and I immediately notified the impacted candidates and the state party chair,” Nessel wrote in a statement, affirming state Sen. Sylvia Santana’s calls for an independent audit.
Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald, who is also a Democrat, backed Santana and Nessel’s call for an audit as well.
“After reviewing the results of the MDP Endorsement Convention, it became clear that votes were incorrectly recorded, people voted who were not onsite, and some votes were not recorded at all,” McDonald posted on Facebook. “I strongly support Senator Santana’s request for an independent audit, and urge my Democratic colleagues across the state to support it as well. It is critical that every voter and every campaign have confidence in the vote.”
The MDP has not yet committed to a full audit, but said that it would review appeals by candidates using its Appeals Committee.
