A controversial Regent for the University of Michigan lost his nomination vote at the Democratic convention this past weekend, losing support from his party after serving as a Regent at the state’s flagship university for eight years.

Acker’s decisive convention loss was a result of a scandal that broke just days before the convention and a party that is rapidly shifting its stance on Israel.

The former Obama administration lawyer roiled members of his party in recent years after he took an aggressive stance against pro-Palestinian protestors at the University of Michigan, reportedly urging Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to investigate student protestors.

Acker was defeated by progressive candidate Amir Makled, who has represented pro-Palestinian students and made inflammatory statements about the conflict, allegedly retweeting a video referring to Israelis as “demons”.

In addition to Acker’s pro-Israel positions, he attracted controversy just days before the convention for allegedly making lewd statements about a Democratic operative and student at the University of Michigan in a Slack chat.

While the exact contents of the messages has not been revealed, the University of Michigan has retained a law firm to investigate the matter and the Senate Committee on University Affairs described the messages as “disgusting”.

Acker’s lawyer has attempted to cast doubt on the accusations by claiming that he has not used slack, and questioning the authenticity of the ‘Slack screengrabs’”.

Makled will face off against Republican nominee Lena Epstein, an oil executive who co-chaired President Donald Trump’s successful 2016 Michigan campaign and Michael Schostak.
