Washtenaw County Sheriff Lashes Out Over Marijuana Probe

The Sheriff of Michigan’s sixth most populous county has lashed out in recent days over an investigation that was started after marijuana was found in her county-issued SUV.

Alyshia Dyer, the Sheriff of Washtenaw County, called the decision to hire outside counsel to investigate the matter party of a “petty grudge” against her.

“Hiring a national corporate law firm over a roach that was found in a vehicle is a distraction, a waste of time, and a poor use of county taxpayer dollars at a time when we have plenty of more pressing needs,” she wrote in the statement posted at 5:46 a.m.

The Washtenaw Sheriff’s office has been the subject of repeated controversy as they are also being investigated after a Sergeant in the office resigned due to allegations of sexual impropriety with a subordinate.

Dyer accused the county of stooping to a “new low” for investigating the matter.

“Using sensitive employee personnel matters as political fodder is a new low,” she said in the post.

County officials have reportedly grown frustrated with Dyer’s dismissive attitude towards the alleged ethical issues in the Sheriff’s Office, with County board Chair Katie Scott publicly responding to Dyer’s post.

“When serious concerns are raised involving public institutions, elected officials have an obligation to take them seriously and ensure they are reviewed appropriately,” Scott said.

Scott went on to express frustration with Dyer’s attitude towards the investigations, implying that the Sheriff is “dismissing them outright”.

“The people of Washtenaw County deserve thoughtful oversight, serious stewardship of public dollars, and leaders willing to engage difficult issues directly rather than dismiss them outright,” she said.

Dyer ran on a progressive platform to run the County’s Sheriff’s Office in 2024 that includes refusing to cooperate with ICE and sending ‘unarmed crisis responders’ to 911 calls.
