A primary challenge against incumbent Democratic Congressman Shri Thanedar has become a flashpoint in the ongoing war between progressives and moderates in the Democratic Party.

The primary challenge was launched by State Representative Donovan McKinney, D-Detroit as some Democrats in the district have expressed dissatisfaction with Thanedar’s establishment brand of politics and mounting personal scandals.

McKinney has received endorsements from progressive heavyweights, including Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.

McKinney is also backed by the Justice Democrats, the same organization that propelled Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to an upset primary victory against House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley.

McKinney has also benefited from the Democratic field consolidating as two candidates were disqualified, leaving just him and Thanedar on the August primary ballot.

“The more that challengers can consolidate and rally around one candidate, the better for them,” David Dulio, a professor of Political Science at Oakland University said. “It’s really about finding the anti-incumbent vote and capitalizing on it.”

McKinney’s campaign rhetoric has aligned with his progressive backers, focusing on a message of economic populism that has swept far-left politicians such as New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to victory.

“I got folks in my community working two, three jobs, and not even making ends meet,” McKinney said. “So for me, this is about improving the economics for people.”

While McKinney’s candidacy will be a test of if progressive economic populism resonates in Michigan, it will also be a referendum on Thanedar, who has been plagued with scandal since being elected in 2022.

In addition to numerous allegations of misconduct regarding his businesses, Thanedar was accused of using hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to promote his candidacy in 2024.
